TTRPG stands for Tabletop Role Playing Game. TTRPGs are collaborative story-telling games where scenarios are resolved through cooperation and creative thinking. Stories are created by the GM, or Game Master, and interacted with by the players who create their own unique character with specialized skills and backstory.
Much of the tabletop roleplaying experience takes place through the construction of a shared, imagined story. The story and the characters advance by facing unique challenges presented by the GM, or Game Master.
Tabletop roleplaying games offer a unique opportunity to tap into cultural symbols known as archetypes, such as the Knight, the Wise-one, or the Outsider. By playing characters that represent these archetypes, participants can confront real-life challenges in a safe, controlled setting.
Tabletop roleplaying allows the players to take risks that they may not be willing or able to take in real life. By using a fictional character to test out actions or social strategies, players can practice real-world skills with reduced anxiety.
When players portray a fictional character that is similar to themselves they begin to empathize with that character. This creates an emotional understanding that can later be used to better empathize with other real-life individuals.
